The Red Devils will be eager to show they can compete without the likes of Ronaldo and Tevez. Their ranks have been boosted with the arrival of Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia and on paper they are still formidable opponents. It has been a relatively quiet transfer period for Chelsea who have signed Daniel Sturridge and Ross Turnbull. They are led by Carlo Ancelotti who will be looking to stamp his mark on the club at the earliest opportunity.

Manchester United 0 - 0 Tottenham

Penalties

The Carling Cup final at Wembley was every bit the chess game that usually occurs between sides managed by Sir Alex Ferguson and Harry Redknapp.
Live Football Online

Manchester United fielded a young team with Ben Foster in goal and he rewarded the faith put in him by several fine saves and another spectacular stop during the penalty shoot-out. Darron Gibson almost out United ahead with a 25 yard effort that sent narrowly over. Gomes then saved from Nani whilst Aaron Lennon started to cause problems that the other end, Rio Ferdinand having to be at his best to block a dangerous cross. Ferdinand then almost turned scorer but his volley went over. Both sides promised much but failed to deliver and Ronaldo only sparkled in parts in an ultimately goal-less first 45 minutes.

The second half saw Anderson introduced and United pressed forward. Tevez put a good chance wide and United’s frustration grew when Ronaldo was booked for diving despite apparently being caught in full flight inside the area by a trailing Ledley King foot. Tottenham through Aaron Lennon produced a superb save from Foster and just before the end of normal time Ronaldo cut inside but his shot flew back out off the post.

Extra-time saw two tired teams trading blows with Darren Bent and Evra nearly grabbing winners for their teams. However, the match seemed destined to go to penalties and once O’Hara’s spot kick was saved by Foster, Spur’s confidence waned and the trophy was on it’s way to Manchester.

Manchester United vs Blackburn Highlights Video

Manchester United 2 - 1 Blackburn Rovers

Edwin van der Sar’s one man record-breaker show was put on hold as Alex Ferguson left the Dutchman on the bench for the visit of Blackburn Rovers.

However, his replacement Tomas Kuszczak had little to do early on as Rovers offered nothing concrete in the form of a threat. United gradually built up the pressure and following an early escape when Ryan Nelson managed to prevent Wayne Rooney opening the scoring, the deadlock ultimately was broken by Rooney capitalising on a Nelson’s failure to repeat his feat, only prodding Nani’s cross on towards the England striker.

The visitors shocked their hosts by grabbing a 32nd minute equaliser courtesy of the lethal Roque Santa Cruz who finished impressively, rounding both Rio Ferdinand and keeper Kuszczak before scoring. It was the first goal conceded by the champions in 1337 minutes of action.

Jonny Evans could have restored the Red Devil’s lead but his header was ruled out albeit controversially whilst Nelson could have made up for his earlier error had it not been foer the upright. Evans later limped off injured, a concern given United’s Champions League commitments in mid-week.

It was left to Cristiano Ronaldo to fire home another magical free-kick to give Manchester United the points. The win was not without further controversy as Morten Gamst Pedersen seemed to be pulled back late on by Da Silva inside the penalty area but Howard Webb waived away Rover’s protests.

Southampton boss Jan Poortvliet wants his underdogs to recapture the spirit of 1976 when they host Manchester United in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

The Red Devils were huge favourites to see off Lawrie McMenemy's second division Saints at Wembley 33 years ago, but Bobby Stokes' goal gave the south coast side a 1-0 victory and their only major trophy.

Man Utd vs Middlesbrough Highlights

Manchester United 1 - 0 Middlesbrough
69' Dimitar Berbatov
Manchester United made hard work of dispatching Middlesbrough at Old Trafford but after missing a glut of chances Dimitar Berbatov spared their blushes with the only goal.

The Bulgarian volleyed home from close range in the 69th minute after Michael Carrick's left-wing cross had bounced back off Boro defender David Wheater.

Berbatov, who replaced Boxing Day's match-winner at Stoke Carlos Tevez after he returned to Argentina on a ''family issue'', was one of the guilty culprits in the first hour of the match.

But he was not the only one with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael, Nemanja Vidic and Ji-sung Park all squandering chances against a determined Middlesbrough side.

Stoke vs Man Utd Highlights Video

Stoke City 0 - 1 Manchester United
Teves 83'
Carlos Tevez ensured Manchester United made a successful return to domestic business and kept up the pressure on the Premier League leaders with a 1-0 win at Stoke.

The striker scored the vital goal with seven minutes remaining to end 10-man City`s brave resistance, shortly after Andy Wilkinson was ordered off.

However it took United a while to get going after they only arrived back on Monday from Japan.

79' 1 - 5 Goal Wayne Rooney

90' Hideo Hashimoto Goal 3 - 5
Wayne Rooney scored twice following his introduction as a late substitute as Manchester United booked a Club World Cup final meeting with LDU Quito on Sunday.

United had already established superiority over Gamba Osaka thanks to first-half headers from Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Rooney's arrival led to a frenzied spell of six goals in 18 minutes, the England man netting either side of a Darren Fletcher effort as the Red Devils kept spirited Gamba resistance at bay.

The laudable objective of this tournament is to gather each continent's top team in one place to show off their respective talents.

Tottenham vs Man Utd Highlights Video

Tottenham 0 - 0 Manchester United
Heurelho Gomes left White Hart Lane a hero as his last-minute save earned Tottenham a goalless draw against Manchester United.

So often ridiculed for his error-prone presence in the Spurs goal this season, Gomes' confidence has begun to return.

And as United desperately searched for a winner to ensure they left for Club World Cup duty in happy mood, the Brazilian produced a fingertip save to turn away a Ryan Giggs free-kick that was going to creep in.

It left the Red Devils rueing their failure to take advantage of second-half superiority and opened the door for Chelsea to surge clear in the Barclays Premier League title race by beating West Ham tomorrow.

Man Utd vs Aab Highlights Video

Manchester United 1 - 2 AaB
Carlos Teves 3'
Michael Jakobsen 31'
Jeppe Curth 45'
Wayne Rooney 52'
Manchester United completed a record-equalling 19th Champions League game unbeaten and secured top spot in Group E, even though victory over Aalborg eluded them at Old Trafford as the game finished 2-2.

Carlos Tevez's fifth goal in a week after just three minutes seemed to set the Red Devils up for a comfortable win - and what would have been only the holders' third in Europe this term.

But an unexpected first-half response from the visitors left United trailing at the interval.

Although Wayne Rooney levelled, the hosts could not find a winner - knowing they will be in Japan on Club World Cup duty on Friday week when a last-16 draw is made that could pair them with, among others, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Man Utd vs Sunderland Highlights Video

Man Utd 1 - 0 Sunderland
90' Nemanja Vidic Goal 1 - 0

Paul Scholes has been ruled out of Manchester United's Premier League encounter with Sunderland at Old Trafford.

The veteran midfielder made his comeback from a knee injury in Wednesday's Carling Cup win over Blackburn. Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Scholes has suffered no reaction but he has decided to leave him on the sidelines.

Darren Fletcher (hamstring) is a doubt but should make it, allowing Ferguson to choose from a virtually full-strength squad.

Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted Carlos Tevez is frustrated at not being a regular member of his Manchester United starting line-up - the Scot does not want anyone who is happy to sit in the stand.

Man Utd vs Blackburn Highlights Video

Man Utd 5 - 3 Blackburn
36' Carlos Tevez Goal 1 - 0
40' Nani Goal 2 - 0
48' 2 - 1 Goal Benedict McCarthy
51' Carlos Tevez (pen) Goal 3 - 1
54' Carlos Tevez Goal 4 - 1
84' 4 - 2 Goal Matt Derbyshire
90' 4 - 3 Goal Benedict McCarthy
90' Carlos Tevez Goal 5 - 3
Carlos Tevez seized his opportunity to fire Manchester United to a 5-3 victory against Blackburn and reach the Carling Cup semi-finals.

With his Old Trafford future at stake, Tevez has no regard for the fixture backlog piling up for Sir Alex Ferguson.

And he hit three goals - after also claiming United's opener, which seemed to have gone in off Aaron Mokoena - to remind Ferguson of his hunger and undoubted ability.

And a one-man mission to reach Wembley seems unlikely to be stopped now, although even with two Football League sides in the draw, the Red Devils might expect a sterner test in the last four.

With his team in such an awful state, Paul Ince might have welcomed a return to his old club, even if it was just as a release from Premier League worries.

Man City vs Man Utd Highlights Video

Man City 0 - 1 Man Utd
42' 0 - 1 Goal Wayne Rooney
68' Red Card Cristiano Ronaldo
Wayne Rooney's 100th club goal was enough for Manchester United to confirm local supremacy with a 1-0 win over City at Eastlands - but Cristiano Ronaldo did not help much with a needless red card.

Ronaldo's temper has been threatening to boil over for some time now but his decision to push his hands towards Rooney's corner midway through the second half seemed bizarre.

Already booked, referee Howard Webb duly produced a second yellow card, condemning United to a nervy finish in which Patrice Evra cleared off the line from Richard Dunne although Joe Hart also denied Rooney seconds later.

Villarreal vs Man Utd Highlights Video

Villarreal 0 - 0 Man Utd
Cristiano Ronaldo was the centre of attention as Manchester United confirmed their place in the next stage of the Champions League.

• Fergie: We deserved better

For the second successive match, the Portugal winger had to endure some stiff challenges. He was left with cuts on his ankle at the weekend in the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa.

Then tonight he was the victim of a high challenge for Joan Capdevila that saw him dismissed with seven minutes to go.

Ronaldo had come closest to making the breakthrough in the first half but his effort was tipped onto the bar by Diego Lopez.
