The Black Cats had two wonderful opportunities to beat Aston Villa before the onset of penalties but wasted both.  Villa keeper Brad Guzan was the hero on both occasions, saving atame  penalty from Kenwyne Jones and then denying Kieran Richardson in extra time. Captain Lorik Cana, Jordan Henderson and Andy Reid missed their spot kicks in the shootout as Villa triumphed 3-1 on penalties.

West Ham were involved in a derby against local rivals Arsenal last Sunday. The Hammers were trailing 2-0, but goals from Carlton Cole and Alessandro Diamanti allowed them to pick up a valuable point. However Gianfranco Zola's men are still firmly entrenched in the relegation zone, with just six points taken from nine fixtures.
