But Lahm snatched victory for Germany with a curling shot into the top corner at St. Jakob Park.

Goals from Turkey's Ugur Boral and Bastian Schweinsteiger in an absorbing first half had left the game evenly poised.

Turkey won in even more stunning circumstances than against Czech Republic in their final group game, having looked dead and buried after Croatia's Ivan Klasnic had broken 119 minutes of goalless action.

Ruud van Nistelrooy had taken the match into the added period, cancelling out Roman Pavlyuchenko's 56th-minute opener with a stooping header four minutes before the end of normal time.

But Russia's energy levels proved decisive and after Torbinski had poked home a finish in the 112th minute, the lively Arshavin made Russia's qualification safe with a third four minutes later.

Van Bronckhorst completed a wonderful evening for Holland by heading past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in the 79th minute as the Dutch celebrated their first victory against the Italians since the 1978 World Cup.

France forward Karim Benzema is hoping to use Tuesday's friendly against Colombia to seal his place in Raymond Domenech's starting XI for Euro 2008.

The France players were booed on Saturday night as they played out a 0-0 draw against Paraguay.

But the form of Benzema was a rare bright spot for Les Bleus, asking questions of their South American opponents particularly through his link-up play with Franck Ribery.

However, Benzema is not convinced he has done enough to earn a starting berth for France's June 9 opener against Romania.

Two goals from Jermain Defoe ensured the England players will head for their summer holidays in a positive frame of mind and the report on the first six months of Capello's reign should read 'shows promise but still room for improvement.'
