Liverpool vs Portsmouth Highlights

Liverpool 1 - 0 Portsmouth
75' Steven Gerrard (pen)

It needed a Steven Gerrard penalty to make sure Liverpool did not waste the tremendous victory they achieved at Chelsea at the weekend as they saw off spirited Portsmouth 1-0.

That win put Liverpool top of the Premier League, and a slip-up would have been a disaster for the Anfield men.

Tony Adams, in his first match in command of Pompey following Harry Redknapp's departure, saw his side push Liverpool all the way.

But Gerrard's spot-kick with 15 minutes left kept Liverpool top and extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches this season.

72' Robinho Goal 3 - 0
Robinho produced a touch of Brazilian magic to light up a dark October day, scoring his first Manchester City hat-trick to send the Blues fans wild.

At £32.5million, Robinho did not come cheap.

But with three clinical swipes of the boot he showed exactly why Chelsea wanted him and why Mark Hughes' smashed the British transfer record to get him.

Stoke may not be the most formidable opposition but Robinho proved brains will always overcome brawn as well as giving City's European aspirations a much-needed shove in the right direction.

World Cup Qualifying Portugal vs Albania Highlights Video 10/15/08
Portugal 0 - 0 Albania
Portugal's disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign continued on Wednesday as they were held to a goalless draw at home to 10-man Albania.

Admir Teli was sent off for the visitors just before half-time after only coming on as a substitute in the 24th minute and, shorn of the creative talents of Maniche and Deco, Portugal could not find a way through.

It capped a miserable week for Carlos Quiroz's men, who failed to find the target in Saturday's 0-0 stalemate against Sweden, which followed a 3-2 defeat to Denmark last month.

Wayne Rooney 74'

Wayne Rooney continued his fine run of form for England as they overcame a demanding hurdle in the Dinamo Stadium to create their own slice of history in a World Cup qualifier.

The Manchester United star took his tally to five in the last three internationals with two clinical second-half finishes for Fabio Capello's side.

It means that England have won their opening four games in a World Cup qualifying campaign for the first time, surpassing the trio of victories ahead of the 1958, 1986 and 1998 tournaments.

Venezuela 0 - 4 Brazil

5' 0 - 1 Goal Kaká
9' 0 - 2 Goal Robinho

Kaka scored a superb goal only six minutes into his first international for eleven months to set Brazil on the way to a 4-0 win over Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

Robinho and Adriano, with his first international goal since the 2006 World Cup, added two before the 20th minute to effectively kill off the game and give Brazil their 18th win in 19 outings against their northern neighbours.

Robinho completed the scoring in the second half while Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar was also outstanding, making one brave save when the score was goalless and pulling off a brilliant double save in the second half.

Estonia vs Spain
Spain winger Albert Riera wants to make up for missing out on Euro 2008 by convincing coach Vicente del Bosque to give him a regular place in the squad for the 2010 World Cup campaign.

Liverpool's new recruit Riera was given a chance by Del Bosque on Tuesday after injury forced Sevilla's Diego Capel out of the squad to visit Estonia on Saturday, and Belgium four days later in Group Five qualifiers.

Netherlands 2 - 0 Iceland
15' Joris Mathijsen Goal 1 - 0
65' Klaas-Jan Huntelaar Goal 2 - 0

Joris Mathijsen and Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored either side of the break to give Netherlands a 2-0 home victory over Iceland in their World Cup Group Nine qualifier on Saturday.

The injury-depleted Dutch, missing four regulars, made a fine start when a cleared corner was brought in again by Rafael van der Vaart to set up Mathijsen to open the scoring at the near post after 15 minutes.

Despite several good chances the home side had to wait until 20 minutes into the second half before sealing the victory when Huntelaar netted after a defence-splitting combination with Van der Vaart.

Netherlands are top of the group with six points from two matches, two points ahead of second-placed Scotland, who have played three. The Dutch travel to meet Norway, who have two points from two matches, on Wednesday.

Germany retained top spot in World Cup qualifying Group Four after first-half goals from Lukas Podolski and Michael Ballack gave them a 2-1 win over Russia on Saturday.

Podolski opened the scoring when he picked up Miroslav Klose's pass on the edge of the penalty area in the ninth minute, hustled his way around defender Vasily Berezutsky and slammed the ball past Igor Akinfeyev in the Russian goal.

Captain Ballack was in the right place to double Germany's lead 20 minutes later by side-footing home Bastian Schweinsteiger's clever cross with Akinfeyev stranded.

Dirk Kuyt scored his first Premier League goal since November to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory for Liverpool at Manchester City.

The Holland striker rattled the ball home in stoppage time to stun 10-man City.

The home side had raced into a two-goal lead in the first half through Stephen Ireland and Javier Garrido.

Fernando Torres pulled a goal back before City's Pablo Zabaleta was sent off.

Sunderland 1 - 1 Arsenal
Leadbetter 86'
Febregas 90+3'
Cesc Fabregas cane to Arsenal's rescue with an injury-time equaliser to deny Sunderland victory after a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

The Gunners were within seconds of suffering successive Premier League defeats for the first time since March last year, after substitute Grant Leadbitter smashed home an 86th-minute goal.

But Fabregas, a week after his side had lost at home to promoted Hull, ensured there was no repeat when he headed Robin van Persie's corner home deep into added-time.

36' Carlos Henrique Red Card
64' 1 - 1 Goal Mirko Vucinic
71' 1 - 2 Goal Julio Baptista
83' 1 - 3 Goal Julio Baptista
Roma breathed new life into their Champions League Group A campaign as Julio Baptista grabbed a second-half double to see them come from behind and secure a win against 10-man Bordeaux.

The Italian side were dreadful in the opening hour of a scrappy match and deservedly went behind when Yoann Gourcuff curled home a superb 20-yarder in the 15th minute.

But the contest turned on the 36th-minute sending-off of Les Girondins centre-back Henrique, for a sly elbow on Simone Perrotta, and Roma eventually woke from their torpor.

Mirko Vucinic levelled matters just after the hour mark and substitute Baptista bagged a brace in the final 20 minutes to seal the win at the Stade Chaban-Delmas.

FC Zürich vs AC Milan Highlights Video

FC Zürich 0 - 1 AC Milan
70' 0 - 1 Goal Andriy Shevchenko
While Zurich were outmatched and got a good look at what Milan are capable of two weeks ago, they will not easily recognize the side they face on Thursday. Milan are now a much improved team, and the confidence and self-assuredness of the players seems to have gone through the roof.

In the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday, the Rossoneri were the better side, even if they kept the 1-0 score secure largely in part to Inter Milan’s inability to finish their attacking movements; but it wasn’t just that. Milan had the better of the chances, and each time they had possession in the final attacking third of the field, you almost got the sense they could have scored.

When Milan and Zurich first met, Milan were unsure of themselves following two losses in their first two matches of the season, against Genoa and Bologna of all teams. Now, Milan are brimming with confidence, and must feel that they can go all the way in the UEFA Cup, even if it is viewed by most in the Milan camp as a secondary goal.
