Germany 1 - 2 England
23' 0 - 1 Goal Matthew Upson
63' Patrick Helmes Goal 1 - 1
84' 1 - 2 Goal John Terry

John Terry provided England with the perfect end to 2008 by nodding home a late winner to beat Germany in Berlin.

Terry sent 7,000 visiting fans into raptures when he got his head to Stewart Downing's curling free-kick six minutes from time, making up for a joint blunder with Scott Carson that let the hosts back into a contest they had been dominated in.

Derided as a meaningless fixture, the friendly will instead go down as an important staging post in Fabio Capello's tenure, with Terry's central defensive partner Matthew Upson putting England on their way to a richly-deserved triumph with a close range finish midway through the opening period.
Arsenal's medical staff were advised of the injury soon after the incident.

Wayne Rooney continued his fine run of form for England as they overcame a demanding hurdle in the Dinamo Stadium to create their own slice of history in a World Cup qualifier.

The Manchester United star took his tally to five in the last three internationals with two clinical second-half finishes for Fabio Capello's side.

It means that England have won their opening four games in a World Cup qualifying campaign for the first time, surpassing the trio of victories ahead of the 1958, 1986 and 1998 tournaments.

Theo Walcott grabbed a stunning hat-trick as England heroically overcame the hostility of Maksimir Stadium to end in style Croatia's unbeaten record in home qualifiers.

Fabio Capello's men laid to rest the ghost of previous defeats to Croatia, who beat them twice in their last campaign, in a victory that will rank up there with Germany in Munich and Holland at Wembley. Wayne Rooney, who had a hand in all of Walcott's goals, struck the other.

55' 0 - 2 Goal Joe Cole
Joe Cole - the player Fabio Capello is reluctant to include in his starting line-up - again spared his blushes as England finally overcame the minnows of Andorra in their opening World Cup qualifier in Barcelona's Olympic Stadium.

The Chelsea midfielder has not been in the first XI for the last four internationals but his contribution after coming on as a second-half substitute means he is in pole position to play against Croatia in Zagreb on Wednesday.

England faced uncertainty off the pitch and more questions on it as the Czech Republic taught them a lesson at Wembley before Joe Cole rescued them with a stoppage-time equaliser.

As Brian Barwick's future as Football Association chief executive was put in the spotlight, the man he appointed as England boss, Fabio Capello, saw his team fall behind twice between Wes Brown's first international goal.

Trinidad & Tobago 0 - 3 England

Gareth Barry had an evening to remember as the first phase of Fabio Capello's reign as England coach reached a satisfactory conclusion via a comfortable win against Trinidad and Tobago.

The Aston Villa midfielder scored his first goal for his country - eight years after his debut - and then was handed the captain's armband by Capello for the second half after David Beckham had been substituted.

Two goals from Jermain Defoe ensured the England players will head for their summer holidays in a positive frame of mind and the report on the first six months of Capello's reign should read 'shows promise but still room for improvement.'
