Aston Villa vs Stoke Highlights Video

Aston Villa 2 - 2 Stoke City

A more familiar-looking Villa side took to the field against struggling Stoke hoping to put their UEFA Cup exit firmly behind them. Tony Pulis’ side, without an away win all season, set their stall out to frustrate Martin O’Neill’s men with a 5-4-1 formation.

Aston Villa made all the running and Luke Young caused the visitors problems down the flank. Emile Heskey just failed to latch on to a Gareth Barry ball and another dangerous cross, this time from James Milner, saw Zat Knight head over. Stoke rarely troubled the Villa defence and only Mamady Sidibe managed to cause Brad Friedel worry. Nevertheless, it took Villa until just before half-time to make the breakthrough, Petrov firing home through a crowd of players.

Stoke’s problems were mounting as former Villa keeper Sorensen was replaced by Simonsen due to injury for the second half. However, the introduction of a fit-again Ricardo Fuller gave the Potters impetus. Only a last-gasp Luke Young tackle prevented him from testing Friedel and he later volleyed over as Stoke pushed forward. When substitute John Carew swept home a second on 79 minutes, Villa seemed home and dry. But Ryan Shawcross headed past Friedel from a James Beattie cross sending the home fans, and some players, into panic mode and Glenn Whelan picked up a failed clearance and fired home a last-minute equaliser from 20 yards.

When Martin O'Neill left 8 first team players at home for the midweek UEFA Cup game it was obvious where his priorities lie. Villa should breeze past Stoke but with the potential to rise even higher in the league table in coming weeks O'Neill is keen to keep churning out the results.

Villa are now 4 points behind Chelsea and Liverpool but have this game in hand. With Arsenal 5 points adrift Aston Villa can afford to look upwards and dare to hope of breaking into the top 3. While Villa's away form has been impressive they have dropped points needlessly at home. If their home form was as good as their away form they would currently be sat 2nd in the table and looking to keep tabs on leaders Manchester United for the title chase.

Only a win will lift Stoke out of the relegation zone at least until midweek. However, they are 1 of only 2 teams yet to win a game away from home so the likelihood of achieving this at Villa Park is minimal. Stoke did beat Villa 3-2 earlier in the season but a lot has changed since then. Will they be able to complete a shock double or will Villa add another 3 points to their impressive tally?.

Stoke vs Portsmouth Highlights Video

Stoke 2 - 2 Portsmouth

Stoke and Pompey set out on Saturday afternoon in the knowledge that defeat for either of them could plunge them back into the relegation quagmire with the winner grabbing themselves some breathing space.

Both teams set out like they meant business with chances at both ends. David James and Stoke counterpart Thomas Sorensen were covered well by their respective defences. However, all the action was saved for the second forty five minutes.

Liam Lawrence and Hermann Hreidarsson were booked after a spat and this sparked a frenzied last half hour. Niko Kranjcar gave Portsmouth the lead on 74 minutes from just inside the box but less than a minute later Stoke were level, James Beattie converting the penalty awarded after Glen Johnson was adjudged to have handled. Four minutes later, Beattie was at it again this time directing a header past the helpless James. Pompey threw everything at the home team, including substitutes David Nugent and Nwankwo Kanu and redemption came in injury time courtesy of the unfortunate Ryan Shawcross who put through his own net. A point was sparse reward for both teams and they will continue to look over their shoulders for a few weeks yet.

Robinho produced a touch of Brazilian magic to light up a dark October day, scoring his first Manchester City hat-trick to send the Blues fans wild.

At £32.5million, Robinho did not come cheap.

But with three clinical swipes of the boot he showed exactly why Chelsea wanted him and why Mark Hughes' smashed the British transfer record to get him.

Stoke may not be the most formidable opposition but Robinho proved brains will always overcome brawn as well as giving City's European aspirations a much-needed shove in the right direction.

He marked his surprise inclusion by striking the decisive blow, heading home Mikel Arteta's corner in the 76th minute.

Everton looked like they would cruise to victory when goals either side of half-time from Yakubu and Victor Anichebe put them firmly in the driving seat.

But Stoke showed grit, and aided by the potent weapon of Rory Delap's long throw they fought back and restored parity through Seyi Olofinjana and Phil Jagielka's own goal.
