Stoke vs Portsmouth Highlights Video

Stoke 2 - 2 Portsmouth

Stoke and Pompey set out on Saturday afternoon in the knowledge that defeat for either of them could plunge them back into the relegation quagmire with the winner grabbing themselves some breathing space.

Both teams set out like they meant business with chances at both ends. David James and Stoke counterpart Thomas Sorensen were covered well by their respective defences. However, all the action was saved for the second forty five minutes.

Liam Lawrence and Hermann Hreidarsson were booked after a spat and this sparked a frenzied last half hour. Niko Kranjcar gave Portsmouth the lead on 74 minutes from just inside the box but less than a minute later Stoke were level, James Beattie converting the penalty awarded after Glen Johnson was adjudged to have handled. Four minutes later, Beattie was at it again this time directing a header past the helpless James. Pompey threw everything at the home team, including substitutes David Nugent and Nwankwo Kanu and redemption came in injury time courtesy of the unfortunate Ryan Shawcross who put through his own net. A point was sparse reward for both teams and they will continue to look over their shoulders for a few weeks yet.

It needed a Steven Gerrard penalty to make sure Liverpool did not waste the tremendous victory they achieved at Chelsea at the weekend as they saw off spirited Portsmouth 1-0.

That win put Liverpool top of the Premier League, and a slip-up would have been a disaster for the Anfield men.

Tony Adams, in his first match in command of Pompey following Harry Redknapp's departure, saw his side push Liverpool all the way.

But Gerrard's spot-kick with 15 minutes left kept Liverpool top and extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches this season.

Jermain Defoe scored a first-half penalty against former club Tottenham before Peter Crouch added a second as Portsmouth won 2-0 and left Juande Ramos' hapless side rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.

After gaining just two points from the first six matches Ramos was subjected to chants of ''You don't know what you are doing'' from fans after he took 73 minutes to send on top-scorer Darren Bent for lone striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

But for Pompey it was a welcome return to winning ways having conceded 10 goals in their previous two matches, although the victory was tarnished when Lassana Diarra was sent off after a second yellow card foul on fellow Frenchman Benoit Assou-Ekotto two minutes from time.

Darren Fletcher (32)
Manchester United ended their Fratton Park jinx to grab a 1-0 win, their first Premier League victory of the season, with a scruffy goal in the 33rd minute which left Portsmouth still pointless.

Darren Fletcher claimed the goal after Patrice Evra's cross rebounded off Sol Campbell and then the Scot's shins before creeping beyond stranded goalkeeper David James.

Portsmouth 1-2 Man Utd

Second-half goals from Chris Eagles and Carlos Tevez gave United a deserved win in what was a decent work-out against Premier League opposition, a side that will become familiar foes in the coming weeks. This is the first of three matches in the space of a month against Harry Redknapp’s men; there’s also the Community Shield at Wembley on 10 August, then the league encounter two weeks later at Fratton Park.
