This game could well turn out to be a relegation 6 pointer at the end of the season. If Boro claim the spoils; they have played an extra game but will at least temporarily leapfrog Spurs in the EPL table. When Winning IS Everything

Three games watched, three victories achieved in differing circumstances and with differing rewards. The performances were not convincing but what mattered was the result. Middlesbrough and Manchester United were respectively the benefactors of a place in the last eight of the FA Cup and a priceless three points in the case of the former, and the Carling Cup in the latter.

For a team without a league win in a dozen games and without a goal scored in almost as long, Boro’s 2-0 win double over West Ham and Liverpool brought an almost audible sigh of relief to Teeside.

Progress into the FA Cup quarter finals for the fourth time in as many years was a welcome distraction from Gareth Southgate’s side’s league concerns. An absolute stunner from Stewart Downing settled nerves and Tuncay’s second shortly afterwards ultimately did for West Ham but the Riverside groundsman would have had to re-paint the upright where Scott Parker shaved a layer off when he should have scored and fingers were still crossed going into injury time, such is the depth of concern in the minds of Boro fans who have seen their favourites throw away points year after year when they should have been secured.

The visit of Liverpool, conquerors of might Real Madrid not 72 hours earlier, brought two trains of thought. One - Boro’s record against the big teams is almost second to none, and two - Boro’s current form promised goals but not in the Scouser’s net. However, after surviving several clear cut chances, Boro grabbed a surprise lead through Xabi Alonso’s unfortunate own goal. Liverpool could have equalised on several occasions before a superb break down the right ended with ‘Teesside’ Tuncay calmly slotting home the second. Boro held on and moved, albeit temporarily, out of the relegation zone but at least closer to the pack.

Sunday’s Carling Cup Final was one of the more predictable affairs such as is often produced when one or more of the ‘big four’ are present. Most finals are eagerly awaited but, in my humble opinion and as a neutral, this one was shit. A brief spell during the first half could have seen United run away with it but they didn’t. The longer it went on the more bored I became and was almost pleading for the referee to insist on penalties after the end of normal time. Oh **** I thought - not another 30 minutes of this crap. I think justice was probably done as Ronaldo was unlucky to have been booked and should on balance have had a penalty instead. Again, just my opinion and that from someone who isn’t exactly his biggest fan.

Anyhow, three matches, three victories, none covering the victors in substantial glory convincing-performance-wise. All goes to prove one thing - sometimes is doesn’t matter how you do it, you’ve just got to win.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen a match and have said ‘lucky b*st*rds’ or the like when a team has nicked a goal in the last minute or has held on to what I have thought was an undeserved lead grabbed early on. It has usually been because I wanted the other team to win. For the winners and their fans, however, the fact that they didn’t necessarily deserve their victory didn’t really matter. I’m not saying that either Boro or United didn’t deserve their wins this week, far from it. But the manner of those victories were not as important as the victories themselves.

I think back to 1999 when United won the treble. The two goals scored in the final moments hid the fact that Munich were the better side. I seem to remember Chelsea playing lowly and now-defunct Scarborough and riding their luck before snatching a victory from the jaws of what would have been a deserved defeat. Like almost every occurrence in history, no-one remembers the losers or even who came second.

I guess that what I was trying to get out of all this is what I have eventually found as a result of putting this down. Forget the last two or three months and forget the missed chances at the other end - Boro won two matches this week and scored four goals. Alright, so they only actually scored 3 of them themselves but who’s counting? I now feel absolved from any guilt or feelings that I should in some way quantify the two wins. We are into the last eight of the FA Cup. We got 3 points in the league and are now, at least, back in the pack with a shout at staying up.

A trip to Wembley and cup glory with another season in the Premiership and UEFA Cup football once again? Or another cup exit when we should have done better and Championship football to look forward to?

Life as a Boro fan usually isn’t boring. I just wish sometimes for a bit of mid-table boredom and abject indifference in the trophy department. Just like the last 130-odd years. We weren’t brought up on drama and excitement on Teesside. We expected promises that were never delivered. Since 1986, we’ve actually had a couple that did get delivered and that has made us nervous. Nervous that we should both expect more and less. That‘s why we always look at extremes like that last paragraph.

And when in a week’s time we’ve been hammered by Spurs and Everton, it’ll be back to service as usual. Or maybe……………………no, not going there………….yet.

Middlesbrough 2 - 0 Liverpool

Gareth Southgate kept faith with the team that knocked West Ham out of the cup whilst Steven Gerard made his 300th start for Liverpool.

Nabil El Zahr and Gary O’Neill both wasted early opportunities to put their respective sides in front. Dirk Kuyt produced a good save from Boro keeper Brad Jones who was also tested no to long afterwards by Babel. Stewart Downing’s left-wing cross was over-hit and found no-one. Chances for both teams followed but it fell to Xabi Alonso to break the deadlock, deflecting Downing’s corner into his own net. Downing had a further chance just before half-time but shot straight at Reina.

The second half saw El Zhar blast high into the bank of fans behind the goal from only ten yards out. Aliadiere had a similar chance but found the North Stand. However, Aliadiere broke down the Liverpool right and his cross was met first time by Sanli Tuncay who calmly slotted the ball into the right hand corner of Reina’s net to double Boro’s lead.

Liverpool worked hard and Gerrard’s burst produced a cross for Kuyt but he mis-kicked and sent the ball wide. Substitute Marlon King could have made himself a hero but failed to beat Reina when one-on-one. Benitez was forced to withdraw Steven Gerrard with fifteen minutes to go and worse nearly followed when O’Neill volleyed just wide from Downing’s cross. Pool tried to devise a late comeback but Middlesbrough held on for a priceless win. Liverpool’s title aspirations now lie in tatters.

Boro are deep in the mire so it is not the best time to host Liverpool who are going all out to keep tabs on Man U in the title chase. Boro are 3 points from safety and have only taken a shocking 6 points from the last 14 games. The pressure is on at the Riverside for manager Gareth Southgate who has previously guided the team through thick and thin.

Liverpool recorded an impressive away win midweek in the Champions League. They were one of the few teams to claim a win at the Bernabeu with a 1-0 scoreline which will stand them in excellend stead for the return leg at Anfield. However, Liverpool were held to a draw last weekend and slipped further behind Man U in the title chase. Boro should on paper be a relatively easy 3 points but manager Rafa Benitez must avoid any further slip ups if there is any hope of wrestling the title from the Red Devils.

Middlesbrough v Wigan Highlights Video

Middlesbrough 0 - 0 Wigan

Second-bottom Boro kicked off against top-ten side Wigan knowing that only a win would do. However, in a first half dominated by the frequency of referee Mike Dean flashing yellow cards, the only thing Boro picked up was a serious-looking injury to French midfielder Didier Digard following what cold be described as a ‘strong’ tackle by ex-Boro Lee Cattermole. Wigan looked the more likely to threaten breaking the deadlock but five bookings and four minutes of added time were the highlights of the first 45 minutes.

The introductions of Tuncay and Aliadiere for Middlesbrough and Rodallega and Sibierski for Wigan failed to change the course of a game in which the visitors had the better chances. Brad Jones was by far the busier keeper but should have been helpless on at least one occasion with substitute Rodallega being guilty of failing to take a couple of good opportunities. Middlesbrough managed a couple of token efforts but looked woefully inadequate up front once again.

Boro are left goal-less again and whilst Wigan boss Steve Bruce may consider this two points dropped in what was a winnable match, Gareth Southgate will be wondering where the next goal is coming from.

Man Utd vs Middlesbrough Highlights

Manchester United 1 - 0 Middlesbrough
69' Dimitar Berbatov
Manchester United made hard work of dispatching Middlesbrough at Old Trafford but after missing a glut of chances Dimitar Berbatov spared their blushes with the only goal.

The Bulgarian volleyed home from close range in the 69th minute after Michael Carrick's left-wing cross had bounced back off Boro defender David Wheater.

Berbatov, who replaced Boxing Day's match-winner at Stoke Carlos Tevez after he returned to Argentina on a ''family issue'', was one of the guilty culprits in the first hour of the match.

But he was not the only one with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael, Nemanja Vidic and Ji-sung Park all squandering chances against a determined Middlesbrough side.

Middlesbrough vs Arsenal Highlights

Middlesbrough 1 - 1 Arsenal
17' 0 - 1 Goal Emmanuel Adebayor
29' Jeremie Aliadiere Goal 1 - 1
Former Gunner Jeremie Aliadiere delivered another blow to Arsene Wenger's flickering Premier League title hopes by denying Arsenal three precious points in a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Aliadiere pounced with a fine glancing header in the 29th minute to cancel out Emmanuel Adebayor's 17th-minute opener and ultimately ensure Gareth Southgate's men a well-deserved share of the spoils.

Stewart Downing was denied a second-half winner by a fine save from Manuel Almunia but the Gunners also had their chances through Robin van Persie and substitute Nicklas Bendtner.

And at the final whistle there was little doubt which side was happier with the point with Wenger facing up to the prospect that his side would be even further adrift of the division's top three by the weekend's end.

Man Utd vs Middlesbrough Highlights

Man Utd 3 - 1 Middlesbrough

25' Cristiano Ronaldo Goal 1 - 0
56' 1 - 1 Goal Adam Johnson
66' Red Card Emanuel Pogatetz
79' Ryan Giggs Goal 2 - 1
90' Nani Goal 3 - 1
It was almost as if Cristiano Ronaldo had never been away as he marked his return to Manchester United's starting line-up with a goal as they beat Middlesbrough 3-1 in the Carling Cup third round.

Exactly 125 days after the final one of his 42 last season, Ronaldo converted his first of this one.

A Carling Cup tie with Middlesbrough may be somewhat less enthralling than a Champions League final at the Luzhniki Stadium but the headers were eerily similar, marking the end of a turbulent summer for Ronaldo and providing confirmation he intends to be a major player for United again this season - despite his stated desire to join Real Madrid.

Tottenham's aspirations of challenging the Barclays Premier League's big four suffered an early setback as Middlesbrough claimed an opening-day 2-1 victory at the Riverside Stadium.

Defender David Wheater scored the first in the 71st minute after an Afonso Alves shot had come back off the underside of the crossbar and Mido, on for Alves, turned in a second with four minutes to go.

Full Time: Middlesbrough 2 - 2 Man Utd

Manchester United had to rely on a 74th minute goal from Wayne Rooney to earn a 2-2 at Middlesbrough. Cristiano Ronaldo put the visitors in front before Afonso Alves bagged a brace either side of the break.

But United came back strongly and Rooney equalised but it's a result which gives Chelsea renewed hope of the title.
