Wigan vs West Ham Live

Wigan vs West Ham Live

An exciting encounter awaits midweek between 2 very evenly matched sides in the English Premier League. Wigan battled but ultimately succumbed to the might of Chelsea at the weekend. However, their resilience gave many food for thought. West Ham scraped past Man City to return to form and gain momentum in their chase for 6th place which is still not out of reach.

Wigan were so close to claiming a point at Stamford Bridge but a late goal by Oliver Kapo allowed the Blues to claim the spoils. Despite such determination the Latics are slowly losing their hold in the league table. Without a win in 7 games they have slid to 8th. They can however leapfrog the Hammers if they claim a home win.

Chelsea 2 - 1 Wigan Athletic

Michael Mancienne made his first Premier League start for Chelsea whilst Steve Bruce was forced to bring in Paul Scharner to replace the suspended Ben Watson.

After a slow start at Stamford Bridge, Amr Zaki had a chance to break a duck that has lasted since October but his shot was deflected wide. Scharner also had a good opportunity but couldn’t beat Petr Cech. Chelsea eventually took charge and when a Frank Lampard cross was half-cleared, captain John Terry volleyed home via a slight deflection. Chris Kirkland later denied Alex but, following Lee Cattermole’s yellow for another nasty challenge, Wigan pushed forward and Ashley Cole was forced to clear a Titus Bramble header off the line. With chances for both teams, how the score remained 1-0 at half time was anyone’s guess.

The second half didn’t produce the expected action but Frank Lampard nearly followed up his mid-week praise of Didier Drogba by setting him up for their second but Titus Bramble cleared spectacularly after Drogba had beaten Kirkland. Zaki curled a shot wide of the post before Wigan shocked Chelsea when Maynor Figueroa’s cross was turned past Cech by an unmarked Olivier Kapo at the far post. It looked like the Blues had thrown it away but Michael ballack’s flick on from a free-kick was met by Lampard and he headed over Kirkland to snatch all three points.

Wigan were flying high in the Premiership under the tutelage of Steve Bruce. However, with only 1 goal in 6 games and without a win since mid January it is not the best time for the Latics to be visiting a revitalised Chelsea side.

Chelsea put one past Juve midweek to give them a crucial buffer to take into the away leg of their Champions League tie. It does however, give Wigan a few days extra rest over the London side. Middlesbrough v Wigan Highlights Video

Middlesbrough 0 - 0 Wigan

Second-bottom Boro kicked off against top-ten side Wigan knowing that only a win would do. However, in a first half dominated by the frequency of referee Mike Dean flashing yellow cards, the only thing Boro picked up was a serious-looking injury to French midfielder Didier Digard following what cold be described as a ‘strong’ tackle by ex-Boro Lee Cattermole. Wigan looked the more likely to threaten breaking the deadlock but five bookings and four minutes of added time were the highlights of the first 45 minutes.

The introductions of Tuncay and Aliadiere for Middlesbrough and Rodallega and Sibierski for Wigan failed to change the course of a game in which the visitors had the better chances. Brad Jones was by far the busier keeper but should have been helpless on at least one occasion with substitute Rodallega being guilty of failing to take a couple of good opportunities. Middlesbrough managed a couple of token efforts but looked woefully inadequate up front once again.

Boro are left goal-less again and whilst Wigan boss Steve Bruce may consider this two points dropped in what was a winnable match, Gareth Southgate will be wondering where the next goal is coming from.
