Sunderland did not feature at the weekend so manager Ricky Sbragia leads a relatively fresh team to Anfield. A string of results has given the Black Cats potential to break into the top half of the English Premier League table something unheard of in recent years.

A number of players continue to be sidelined for Liverpool. Add to this their hectic schedule and the remainder are starting to look a little fatigued. Torres continues to concern manager Benitez after picking up an ankle injury in their Champions League game. The Reds main issue seems to be scoring goals and this is something they need to overcome asap if they are to even challenge Chelsea in the league table let alone Manchester United.

Middlesbrough vs Liverpool Highlights Video

Middlesbrough 2 - 0 Liverpool

Gareth Southgate kept faith with the team that knocked West Ham out of the cup whilst Steven Gerard made his 300th start for Liverpool.

Nabil El Zahr and Gary O’Neill both wasted early opportunities to put their respective sides in front. Dirk Kuyt produced a good save from Boro keeper Brad Jones who was also tested no to long afterwards by Babel. Stewart Downing’s left-wing cross was over-hit and found no-one. Chances for both teams followed but it fell to Xabi Alonso to break the deadlock, deflecting Downing’s corner into his own net. Downing had a further chance just before half-time but shot straight at Reina.

The second half saw El Zhar blast high into the bank of fans behind the goal from only ten yards out. Aliadiere had a similar chance but found the North Stand. However, Aliadiere broke down the Liverpool right and his cross was met first time by Sanli Tuncay who calmly slotted the ball into the right hand corner of Reina’s net to double Boro’s lead.

Liverpool worked hard and Gerrard’s burst produced a cross for Kuyt but he mis-kicked and sent the ball wide. Substitute Marlon King could have made himself a hero but failed to beat Reina when one-on-one. Benitez was forced to withdraw Steven Gerrard with fifteen minutes to go and worse nearly followed when O’Neill volleyed just wide from Downing’s cross. Pool tried to devise a late comeback but Middlesbrough held on for a priceless win. Liverpool’s title aspirations now lie in tatters.

Middlesbrough vs Liverpool Live

Boro are deep in the mire so it is not the best time to host Liverpool who are going all out to keep tabs on Man U in the title chase. Boro are 3 points from safety and have only taken a shocking 6 points from the last 14 games. The pressure is on at the Riverside for manager Gareth Southgate who has previously guided the team through thick and thin.

Liverpool recorded an impressive away win midweek in the Champions League. They were one of the few teams to claim a win at the Bernabeu with a 1-0 scoreline which will stand them in excellend stead for the return leg at Anfield. However, Liverpool were held to a draw last weekend and slipped further behind Man U in the title chase. Boro should on paper be a relatively easy 3 points but manager Rafa Benitez must avoid any further slip ups if there is any hope of wrestling the title from the Red Devils.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Highlights Video

Liverpool 1 - 1 Manchester City

Liverpool entertained Manchester City at Anfield hoping to close the gap on leaders Manchester United. Steven Gerrard was not considered fit for selection, possibly with the Champions League in mind, and Xabi Alonso was also missing.

City started the better and should have broken the deadlock early on but Stephen Ireland’s shot following good work by Robinho was easily dealt with by Jose Reina. Liverpool did come into the game and with Fernando Torres desperately trying to give the team the drive normally provided by their absent captain, he served up chances for Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun that Torres himself would have thrived on. Sadly, neither of the former showed similar guile and wasted both opportunities.

The second half did not see an improvement in Pools fortunes and when Craig Bellamy’s effort went in off Arbeloa, the Kop must have wondered whether it simply wasn’t their day. Rafa Benitez’s threw everything at City and eventually found the equaliser courtesy of Dirk Kuyt’s tidy finish. Benayoun nearly snatched all three points late on but the visitors held on for a well-deserved point.

With six home wins compared to United’s twelve, Liverpool’s chances of winning their first league title in two decades are slipping away.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Live

Arguably the match of the day this Sunday Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield looking to keep tabs on Manchester United at the top of the league table. Man U pulled out another win on Saturday but did lose any extension of their clean sheet record as Blackburn equalised early on.

Liverpool will be hopeful of claiming all 3 points against Manchester City who are plagued with consistency issues. Manager Mark Hughes was furious with the result against Portsmouth and will be after top performances from all players if they are to hope to take points from Liverpool. City are 9th in the league but if they do not manage to deal with their inconsistent results can drop quickly.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Highlights Video

Liverpool 2 - 0 Chelsea
It does not get better than this as live premier league action on Sunday sees Chelsea visit Liverpool at Anfield in a game that could decide the latter's credibility as title challengers this season.

With just two wins in their last seven games, the Reds have faltered big time. Manager Rafa Benitez chose an inappropriate time to rant at Man United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson. Ever since that outburst, Liverpool have struggled to string together some wins. Their last three games against Stoke City, Everton and Wigan Athletic have ended in draws leaving them struggling at the third spot on the league table behind Manchester United and Chelsea.

58' Robbie Keane Goal 3 - 0
Liverpool went back to the top of the Premier League with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Bolton at Anfield.

Chelsea's victory earlier in the day put the London side in pole position until Robbie Keane's double and a goal from Albert Riera ensured the Reds went back to the head of the pack.

The win meant Liverpool have completed all of 2008 unbeaten at home in the league.

Missing Alvaro Arbeloa with a hamstring injury, manager Rafael Benitez re-jigged his back line, moving Jamie Carragher to right-back with Sami Hyypia slotting into the centre of defence.

22' 0 - 2 Goal Jamie Carragher (og)

32' Steven Gerrard Goal 2 - 2
Liverpool struggled to their third successive home league draw as Premier League new boys Hull produced another accomplished away performance for a 2-2 draw.

Hull had already won at Arsenal and Spurs and scored three in defeat at Manchester United.

And if not for Steven Gerrard they would have ended Liverpool's season-long unbeaten home record.

Hull were two ahead through Paul McShane and a Jamie Carragher own goal before Gerrard scored twice in eight minutes, taking his tally for the season to 11.

Gerrard was among the players returning after being rested from the Champions League win over Eindhoven in midweek, along with Jose Reina, Dirk Kuyt and Xabi Alonso.

Blackburn vs Liverpool Highlights Video

Blackburn Rovers 1 - 3 Liverpool
69' 0 - 1 Goal Xabi Alonso
79' 0 - 2 Goal Yossi Benayoun
86' Roque Santa Cruz Goal 1 - 2
90' 1 - 3 Goal Steven Gerrard
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez will be looking for an improved performance from his side this Saturday when they take on struggling Blackburn Rovers in their next Premiership clash.

Liverpool dropped two vital points last weekend as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to West Ham United. With title rivals Chelsea losing out against Arsenal on Sunday, it was a great chance for Liverpool to go three points clear at the top of the league table but the Reds failed to create any real chances as West Ham hung on to claim a point from the match.

Second-half goal puts Liverpool into

Fernando Torres scored a second-half goal to give visiting Liverpool a 1-0 victory over 10-man Inter Milan on Tuesday and send the Reds to the European Champions League quarter-finals.

Liverpool beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the San Siro on the night, and 3-0 on aggregate, to make it four English sides in the quarter-finals for the first time.

Torres controlled a cross inside the area and beat Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar with a low shot in the 64th minute. Inter played the last 40 minutes a man down after defender Nicolas Burdisso was sent off with his second yellow card.

After Fernando Torres had grabbed the crucial second-half winner, Benitez added: 'I do not have any preference now who we play next, but I would be more than happy to face an English side in the final.

Liverpool joins three other EPL teams Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in the quarter-finals, making this the first time four teams from the same country have made it to the final eight.

FC Barcelona, AS Roma, Schalke and Fenerbahce also have made it to the quarter-finals.

Liverpool vs Fulham Highlights Video

Liverpool 0 - 0 Fulham
Chelsea's draw and Arsenal's heavy defeat were the only things to cheer a frustrated Liverpool crowd as they saw their side waste a chance to take over the top after being held 0-0 by visiting Fulham.

Liverpool did not have Steven Gerrard around to save them this time after a limp performance, his torn groin muscle having a damaging impact on Rafael Benitez's side.

Fulham, with one of the best defensive records in the top flight, have never won at Anfield and rarely looked like doing so this time.

But their dogged performance claimed only their second away point of the season and also secured their third goalless draw in eight visits to Anfield.

Bolton vs Liverpool Highlights Video

Bolton 0 - 2 Liverpool
28' 0 - 1 Goal Dirk Kuyt
73' Gerrard

Liverpool survived a test of character at Bolton to maintain their challenge at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at the Reebok Stadium.

The disappointment of the Carling Cup defeat at Tottenham in midweek was swept away by what eventually turned out to be a convincing victory.

Liverpool have never enjoyed Bolton's physical approach but this time they stuck to their gameplan and won with fine goals from Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard.

Kuyt opened the scoring from Fabio Aurelio's cross before Gary Cahill's header was controversially ruled out by referee Rob Styles.

49' 3 - 1 Goal Damien Plessis
52' Roman Pavluchenko Goal 4 - 1
63' 4 - 2 Goal Sami Hyypia

Harry Redknapp's magic touch continued with a 4-2 victory over Liverpool at White Hart Lane to secure Tottenham a place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

As if to illustrate the manager's impact since taking charge 18 days ago, it was two players on the fringes during Redknapp's revolution who turned the tie with three goals in six minutes just before the break against Rafael Benitez's reserves.

Roman Pavlyuchenko, who netted the late winner when Liverpool were beaten by Spurs in the Premier League, opened the scoring with a crisp finish before Fraizer Campbell added his first two for the club since his loan from Manchester United.

Damien Plessis and Sami Hyypia pulled goals back between Pavlyuchenko's second, stirring memories of their second-half Istanbul comeback in the 2005 Champions League final - but Spurs held on to stay in the competition they won in February under Juande Ramos.

Liverpool 3 - 0 West Brom

34' Robbie Keane Goal 1 - 0
43' Robbie Keane Goal 2 - 0
90' Álvaro Arbeloa Goal 3 - 0

Robbie Keane gave Rafael Benitez his 150th victory as Liverpool boss as the Anfield club moved back to the top of the Premier League.

Keane, who had managed to score only twice previously since his summer move from Tottenham - both in the Champions League - finally broke his league duck when he drove home from a Steven Gerrard pass in the 34th minute.

Keane's second came when he rounded Scott Carson a couple of minutes before the break and Alvaro Arbeloa added the gloss in injury time.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid Highlights

Liverpool 1 - 1 Atlético Madrid
37' 0 - 1 Goal Maxi Rodríguez
90' Steven Gerrard (pen)
Steven Gerrard drove home a controversial penalty four minutes into injury time to salvage a dramatic Champions League point for Liverpool.

Atletico will believe they were robbed of a place in the last 16 by referee Martin Hansson's hotly disputed penalty award for a debatable foul on Gerrard by Mariano Pernia.

They had led from the 37th minute following a cleverly constructed Maxi Rodriguez goal and frustrated Liverpool at every turn.

But Gerrard never gave up and his penalty eventually spared Liverpool's blushes and both sides should advance to the last 16.

Liverpool vs Portsmouth Highlights

Liverpool 1 - 0 Portsmouth
75' Steven Gerrard (pen)

It needed a Steven Gerrard penalty to make sure Liverpool did not waste the tremendous victory they achieved at Chelsea at the weekend as they saw off spirited Portsmouth 1-0.

That win put Liverpool top of the Premier League, and a slip-up would have been a disaster for the Anfield men.

Tony Adams, in his first match in command of Pompey following Harry Redknapp's departure, saw his side push Liverpool all the way.

But Gerrard's spot-kick with 15 minutes left kept Liverpool top and extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches this season.

Man City vs Liverpool Highlights Video

Man City 2 - 3 Liverpool

41' Javier Garrido
55' Torres
73' Torres
90+2' Kuyt
Dirk Kuyt scored his first Premier League goal since November to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory for Liverpool at Manchester City.

The Holland striker rattled the ball home in stoppage time to stun 10-man City.

The home side had raced into a two-goal lead in the first half through Stephen Ireland and Javier Garrido.

Fernando Torres pulled a goal back before City's Pablo Zabaleta was sent off.

Liverpool vs PSV Eindhoven Highlights

Liverpool 3 - 1 PSV Eindhoven

4' Dirk Kuyt Goal 1 - 0
34' Robbie Keane Goal 2 - 0
76' Steven Gerrard Goal 3 - 0
78' 3 - 1 Goal Danny Koevermans
Steven Gerrard grabbed his 100th Liverpool goal to leave his side with their Champions League destiny in their own hands after a convincing 3-1 victory at Anfield.

Robbie Keane scored his first goal for the club after 11 blank games since his £20million move from Tottenham, and Gerrard smashed home the third to grab his century of Liverpool goals.

And Dirk Kuyt got in on the act with his 10th goal in 16 Champions League games for the club.

But frankly, Liverpool never got out of second gear against the outclassed Dutch champions.

PSV made three changes from side that beat Eredivisie bottom club Volendam at the weekend, with striker Danny Koevermans sacrificed for extra defensive strength.

Everton vs Liverpool Highlights Video

Everton 0 - 2 Liverpool
Torres 59'
Torres 63'

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres shrugged off his Euro 2008 hangover to score twice to beat 10-man Everton 2-0 in the 208th Merseyside derby.

The Spain international had managed just one goal all season before today's match.

He got himself booked at Goodison Park, argued with referee Mike Riley about the heavy-handed treatment he was getting from Everton's defenders and then hit back where it hurts.

Torres volleyed home his first after 59 minutes and cracked in the second three minutes later.
