Bolton 1 - 0 Newcastle United

Bolton manager Gary Megson’s sealed a new contract as his side aimed to win their third game in four outings. Visitors Newcastle United were still seeking points to ease their worries, so close to the relegation battle.

The first half was dominated by missed chances with Elmander the chief protagonist. Enrique cleared off the line after he waltzed through the Geordie defence but two further chances wasted were of his own doing, prodding the ball over from six yards and fluffing his lines when put clear by Kevin Davies. The visitors only started to make an impact as the half wore on, with Obefemi Martins producing a good stop from Jaaskelainen before heading wide from a later chance.

The second half continued mostly like the first until Ricardo Gardner came on and made the difference Megson had hoped, latching on to a Matt Taylor pass to hit a stunner into the top left-hand corner. Both teams had decent penalty appeals tuned down, Newcastle being perhaps the most aggrieved when Coloccini’s shot hit Jlloyd Samuel on the arm. However, Bolton held on for a deserved victory to ease their relegation worries but deepen those of the St James‘ Park team.

Strangely Newcastle are performing better without manager Joe Kinnear. Kinnear recently underwent heart surgery after taking ill. When the Magpies travel to face Bolton on Sunday they will be looking for a 4th game undefeated in the league - something unheard of in recent times.

5 points from 3 games has lifted United and given them a 5 point buffer from the drop zone. With teams around them struggling to collect any points fans will be hopeful if the team can continue on their current vein. Despite being reduced to 10 men last weekend Newcastle United hung on for a valuable point at Goodison Park last weekend.

Bolton impressed with a win against West Ham last weekend. The points lifted them to 12th in the league and they have the chance to rise into the top half of the table if they manage to take all 3 points this weekend. The home side will however be wary of the threat posed by a spirited Newcastle side.

Bolton v West Ham Highlights Video

Bolton 2 - 1 West Ham

With Bolton still uncomfortably close to the relegation dogfight, Gary Megson watched his side take on 8th placed West Ham Utd at the Reebok.

Matt Taylor settled his managers nerves as early as the tenth minute when his free-kick flew over a leaky-looking wall and past keeper Robert Green in the Hammers goal. It took only two more minutes to double that lead when Kevin Davies met a Johan Elmander cross to fire home.

Gianfranco Zola’s side fought hard to get back into the match, creating some good chances. Mark Noble should have done better when he elected to pass rather than shoot and David di Michele ran half the length of the pitch before troubling the corner flag more than the net. Carlton Cole at least found the target but his goal-bound effort was cleared by Taylor.

West Ham finally got their reward after an hour when Scott Parker halved the deficit, latching on to a Spector low cross. They continued to press and only a brilliant Gary Cahill prevented Di Michele finishing off his own work. Carlton Cole was again denied, this time by Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Bolton goal. Bolton did occasionally threaten and Davies even has claims for a penalty late on but the home side held on for a priceless three points.

To literally add injury to insult, West Ham lost defender James Collins to a pulled hamstring. The full game was available live on our partner network Live Sport. They have over 42,000 members making them the largest network of its kind on the web.

The win meant Liverpool have completed all of 2008 unbeaten at home in the league.

Missing Alvaro Arbeloa with a hamstring injury, manager Rafael Benitez re-jigged his back line, moving Jamie Carragher to right-back with Sami Hyypia slotting into the centre of defence.

Kuyt opened the scoring from Fabio Aurelio's cross before Gary Cahill's header was controversially ruled out by referee Rob Styles.

It was the Trotters' first goal for five hours and 50 minutes and Gardner then turned provider by crossing low for City skipper Richard Dunne to put through his own goal with two minutes remaining.

Ten Men Arsenal Win 3-2

Ten-man Arsenal re-ignited their faint Barclays Premier League title hopes by coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Bolton.

Two goals from Matthew Taylor either side of Abou Diaby's sending-off for a reckless challenge on Gretar Steinsson appeared to have given struggling Wanderers a much-needed boost.

However, in the second half William Gallas poked home a corner, before Robin van Persie equalised from the penalty spot after Gary Cahill had brought down Alexander Hleb and Jlloyd Samuel's own goal with seconds remaining capped a remarkable turnaround.
