Sir Alex Ferguson insisted fate propelled his Manchester United side to a second Champions League triumph in a dramatic penalty shootout against Chelsea.

The United manager said the team, who were led up to receive the European Cup by Sir Bobby Charlton, were inspired by the prospect of winning the trophy 50 years after the Munich air disaster.

Ferguson said: 'We had a cause which was very important. People with causes are difficult to battle against and I think fate was playing its part today. I feel very, very proud.'

Dirk Kuyt scored his first Premier League goal since November to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory for Liverpool at Manchester City.

The Holland striker rattled the ball home in stoppage time to stun 10-man City.

The home side had raced into a two-goal lead in the first half through Stephen Ireland and Javier Garrido.

Fernando Torres pulled a goal back before City's Pablo Zabaleta was sent off.

Raul, Arjen Robben, Gonzalo Higuain and Ruud van Nistelrooy (penalty) were all on target for the champions, who rubbed further salt in Barca's wounds after the Catalan side were comprehensively beaten in the race for the title.

Salomon Kalou gave Chelsea reason to smile again as they closed in on Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester United with a 2-0 win at Manchester City.
