Romania vs France

France did their chances of advancing from a tough Group C no favours when they drew 0-0 with Romania in a tight, tactical affair in their opening match at Euro 2008 on Monday.

The 2006 World Cup runners-up, who will also face the Netherlands and world champions Italy in what is seen as the toughest group of the tournament, looked nervous and failed to breach a tight Romania defence.

World champions Italy suffered a calamitous start to their Euro 2008 campaign as they fell to an impressive Holland in their Group C opener in Bern.

The Dutch were lucky to take a 26th-minute lead after Ruud van Nistelrooy turned in Giovanni van Bronckhorst's effort despite being clearly offside.

Wesley Sneijder then celebrated his 24th birthday in style by adding a stunning breakaway second on the half-hour mark.

Italy had numerous chances to reduce the deficit after the restart but Edwin van der Sar came to the rescue, making superb saves from Andrea Pirlo's free-kick and Fabio Grosso's close-range effort.

Van Bronckhorst completed a wonderful evening for Holland by heading past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in the 79th minute as the Dutch celebrated their first victory against the Italians since the 1978 World Cup.

Spain completed their build-up Euro 2008 on a winning note after downing the United States in Wednesday's friendly thanks to a second-half goal from Xavi.

Russia struck three second-half goals to beat Lithuania 4-1 in their final Euro 2008 warmup on Wednesday.

France vs Colombia

France forward Karim Benzema is hoping to use Tuesday's friendly against Colombia to seal his place in Raymond Domenech's starting XI for Euro 2008.

The France players were booed on Saturday night as they played out a 0-0 draw against Paraguay.

But the form of Benzema was a rare bright spot for Les Bleus, asking questions of their South American opponents particularly through his link-up play with Franck Ribery.

However, Benzema is not convinced he has done enough to earn a starting berth for France's June 9 opener against Romania.

Gareth Barry had an evening to remember as the first phase of Fabio Capello's reign as England coach reached a satisfactory conclusion via a comfortable win against Trinidad and Tobago.

The Aston Villa midfielder scored his first goal for his country - eight years after his debut - and then was handed the captain's armband by Capello for the second half after David Beckham had been substituted.

Two goals from Jermain Defoe ensured the England players will head for their summer holidays in a positive frame of mind and the report on the first six months of Capello's reign should read 'shows promise but still room for improvement.'
